SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition


In 2015, SpaceX created an international student competition to build Hyperloop prototypes. After setting up a 1.2 km long vacuum tube next to SpaceX headquarters in California, the competition has been taking place every summer with several hundred student teams applying each year.

This year’s competition again had one simple objective: the fastest pod wins.
With our latest propulsion concept of 8 smaller motors, we managed to increase the power to weight ratio even more. The improved design lead to a new speed record of 467 km/h and secured first prize.

After a successful first competition, in slightly over 6 months we built a completely new prototype: smaller, lighter and much, much faster. With a mass of only 85 kg and a maximum acceleration of 0.9 g, our own propulsion system made us set a new speed record for Hyperloop prototypes at 324 km/h.

At the first SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition in January 2017, our team’s prototype stormed to victory as the fastest pod excelling against 120 qualified teams over the course of the pod’s technical development and beating the other two finalists on the test track.
